An assistant for people travelling with pets

Pawpass, in the UK, helps pet owners prepare their trips with them. FairAI built the assistant that answers what it takes to bring a pet from one country to another, in several languages, delivered as an API for the Pawpass website.

Question

I’m planning a trip from England to Finland with my cat. What do I need to know?

Pawpass AI

That sounds like an exciting trip! Here are some key points to consider:

Mode of Transport: Travelling by plane is the most direct mode of transport from the UK to Finland. Finnair allows pets under 8kg (including carrier) in the cabin, while larger pets can travel in the hold.

Entry Point: You must enter Finland via Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, which is a permitted border crossing point.

Documentation: You’ll need a valid Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by an authorised vet within 10 days of travel, unless you have a valid pet passport.

Pet Food: Bringing meat or dairy-based pet food and treats into the EU is prohibited unless you have a vet’s note confirming your pet’s medical need for specific food.

Banned Breeds: Cats crossed with wild breeds such as Savannah or Bengal are banned in Finland.

Real questions and answers from the assistant (shortened), in an interface made to show them. What we delivered to Pawpass was the API.

About the client

UK company that helps pet owners with health records and travel documents.

The challenge

The rules for travelling with a pet change from country to country and from carrier to carrier: health certificates, entry points, transport, permitted food. Whoever plans the trip has to piece them together from several sources.

What we built

  • An assistant that answers from the rules for travelling with pets: transport, documents, entry points, food and banned breeds
  • Answers in the language of whoever asks
  • When information is missing, it asks for what it needs: from where to where, which animal, which topic
  • It stays on topic: asked about something other than pet travel, it says so and returns to what it can do
  • An API for the Pawpass website, with a choice between a proprietary and an open-source AI model

Today

We delivered the assistant as an API, ready to connect to the Pawpass website.
